If you are like many of my clients, trying to implement a healthier lifestyle, you have probably experienced some progress and some setbacks. Did you know setbacks are a normal part of weight loss and so is self sabotage. Recognizing, accepting and learning from it when it happens is super important for long term success.
Negative thoughts are a way of self sabotaging your weight loss efforts? Negative self talk can lead to emotional eating. This negative rhetoric can cause stress, depression and other health issues and can drive you to overeat as a way of comforting and calming. What's more, the physical stress created by negative thoughts can increase cortisol levels that make weight loss difficult, if not impossible. What can you do to stop negative thoughts? Writing your thoughts can help. For example, let's say you eat a cookie after promising yourself you wouldn't. Thoughts of failure create negative feelings that could lead you to continue making unhealthy choices like eating a whole pizza for lunch. Before you give up and choose to eat that pizza, You could write this down: "I ate a cookie today, but that doesn't wipe out all the healthy eating and exercise I've done this week. I'm going to get a bottle of water and go enjoy a walk with my favorite podcast." Do you see how this can help? And with practice you could stop the negative thinking that can hold you back from reaching your weight loss goals. Do you have a strategy that has worked for you? I'd love to hear it. Post below.
